Join members and guests for the 2024 summer picnic at the Smithsonian Environmental Research Center. Tour the 18th and 19th century Woodlawn House at 11am followed by an outdoor picnic lunch. After lunch, visit the Sellman Tenant House or hike the Center’s five public trails along the Rhode River, a subestuary of the Chesapeake Bay. APT DC recommends the Contee Watershed Trail which starts at the Contee Mansion Ruins, a stabilized ruin.
Directions and Parking: When you enter the SERC campus, pass the brick security guard kiosk. Woodlawn House is the first house on your left. Park in the gravel parking lot (first left past the security guard kiosk) or in the paved parking lot (right hand side of Woodlawn). Carpooling is encouraged.
What to Bring: Sunscreen, picnic blankets, and lawn chairs.
Pets: Because the Smithsonian Environmental Research Center is an active research facility and wildlife sanctuary, pets are not permitted.
