APT DC invites you to join us for our Annual Summer Picnic! This year, as we celebrate our chapter's 45th anniversary, we will be enjoying the historic and beautiful Oak Hill Cemetery in Georgetown. Enjoy a picnic lunch and spend the day exploring the winding paths of the tranquil cemetery and marveling at the incredible monuments and memorials within this wonderful cultural landscape.

Attendees will be welcomed with a brief lecture on the history of the cemetery by Oak Hill Archivist & Collection Manager Laura Thoms and an opportunity to see inside the 1849 Renwick-designed chapel. Laura has also curated a self-guided walking tour of important sights and monuments in the cemetery as well as a SCAVENGER HUNT that will allow you to explore even more! Prizes will be given for completion of the hunt with a special prize to the first to complete it!

Food/Beverages: APT DC will be supplying Stachowski's sandwiches and beverages.

What to bring: Picnic blankets, lawn chairs, sunscreen, bug spray.

Parking: Limited parking is available inside the cemetery near the event site. Street parking is available within the adjacent neighborhood. We encourage you to carpool or take public transportation.

Pets: Please note that dogs are prohibited in the cemetery.

Adaptability is key to the success of projects involving historic sites, as Unforeseen Conditions have the ability to derail even the most carefully laid plans. These unforeseen conditions can take a variety of forms, such as concealed conditions or features, or unknown previous alterations. They can also take the form of newly discovered treasures including previously unknown historical documentation found in an archive or buried and long forgotten historical artifacts.

The methods for handling these unforeseen conditions are as varied as the conditions themselves, often requiring unique and creative solutions. This symposium invites preservation professionals to share their experiences with unforeseen conditions and consider the following:

• What was the discovered unforeseen condition and in what context was it found?
• How was the unforeseen condition investigated?
• How did the unforeseen condition affect the progress or direction of the project?
• What creative solutions were developed to handle the unforeseen condition?
• How will this experience inform planning for a similar unforeseen condition in the future?

APT DC is seeking submission of abstracts related to the following three topics:

• Case studies of preservation projects with significant unforeseen conditions.
• Application of new or novel technologies and techniques in the handling of unforeseen conditions.
• Panel discussion featuring multiple team members on how collaborations helped overcome unforeseen conditions.

Highest consideration will be given to abstracts that:

• Present compelling ideas, insights, principles, and lessons applicable to other projects
• Present novel analyses or ideas
• Offer stimulating thought or encourage dialogue and debate
• Contain original research
• Make a significant contribution to the body of knowledge in addressing unforeseen conditions
• Represent sites in the APT DC Region (Washington, DC; Virginia; Maryland; West Virginia; Sussex County, DE)

Proposals for presentations ranging from 30 to 60 minutes will be accepted.

Note that depending on the number of submissions selected to present at the symposium, presentations submitted at longer than 30 minutes may be asked to reduce their time.

Furthermore, APT DC is planning to continue their Tech Talk series in 2025 and some presentations not selected for the symposium may be asked to instead give a virtual presentation as part of that series.

APT DC is pleased to announce a call for submissions for an exhibition of works of art as part of our 2025 annual symposium. We invite submissions of original works of visual art that highlight the remarkable historic resources in our region.

While the theme of the symposium is Unforeseen Conditions, the works of art are not required to conform to this theme, although this is encouraged.

At a minimum, they should represent a historic site in the APT DC region, which is defined by Washington, DC; all of Virginia; all of Maryland; all of West Virginia, and Sussex County, DE.

Suggestions for how to highlight the historic sites include:

• Materiality
• Historical Significance
• Hidden History
• Monumentality
• Regionality
• Conveys the aesthetic qualities of a place

Theme: Historic Sites of the APT DC Region

Submission Deadline: July 31, 2025

Show Date: September 5, 2025

Disciplines: All visual media. Audio media not allowed.

Eligibility: Open to all experience levels.

Physical size/format restrictions: Works of art must be limited to 24” x 24” x 12" maximum and should be of a format to sit on a table or easel. If digital media is submitted, the artist is responsible for supplying their own device to show the media.

Submission Method: Submit digital images (max. 10 MB each) and a brief artist statement (200 words maximum) below.

Prizes: APT DC 2025 Symposium attendees will vote for their favorite works. Three winners will be selected to receive a free 1-year individual membership ($40 value) and the top vote getter will also receive a free registration to the 2025 annual holiday party (approx. $80 value).

Artwork Drop-off: September 5, 2025, 8:00am.

Artwork Pick-up: September 5, 2025, 5:00pm. Artists will not receive a free registration to the symposium. If you are not planning to attend the symposium, you must pick up your artwork promptly at 5:00 PM.
